Irregular Cycles and Fertility: When Nutrition Can Help

An irregular cycle is one of the most frequent reasons a pregnancy is slow to arrive: if ovulation is unpredictable or absent, the chances of conception drop drastically. The key question is: why is the cycle irregular?

In many cases, the answer also runs through nutrition. A calorie intake that is too low (restrictive diets, skipped meals, intense training that isn’t compensated for) can “switch off” ovulation: this is so-called hypothalamic amenorrhea. At the opposite end, imbalances such as insulin resistance – common in PMOS – disrupt hormonal communication and make ovulation rare or absent.

In both scenarios, nutrition is a powerful lever: in the first case, the work is about restoring sufficient energy and nutrients; in the second, about stabilizing blood sugar with complete meals — whole-grain carbohydrates, protein, and good fats, well distributed.

One caveat: nutrition helps when the cause is metabolic or nutritional. That’s why the first step is always a medical work-up (a gynecologist and, if needed, an endocrinologist), with nutritional work alongside it. If you live in Berlin and your cycle changed after the move – stress, new habits, long winters – it’s not a rare coincidence: it’s a signal worth listening to.
